Spruill Dog Park Improvements

Sprulli-Park.jpeg

The Spruill Dog Park will be closed for improvements and installation of new water fountains.

A temporary dog park is being built adjacent to the existing dog park so that pet owners will have access to an off-leash area while the work is taking place. Drinking water will not be available during construction so all guests are asked to bring drinking water for themselves and their pets.

Project Timeline

Spruill Dog Park will be closed from August 26th until the middle of October.

Background

In the Fiscal Year 2024 - 2024 budget, the City Council allocated funds to installartificial turf in Spruill Dog Park. However, a survey revealed that users preferred natural turf, despite the need for regular closures for maintenance and rain. Since there was no support for artificial turf, staff was directed to use a portion of the funds to improve storm drainage in the park, connect the pet drinking fountains to the sanitary sewer system, plant additional shade trees, and replace the drinking fountains.

Project Details

The Town is improving drainage for the park, along with installing three new freeze-proof water fountains that will be connected to a nearby sanitary sewer system. This will alleviate the need for overflow “sumps” filled with gravel adjacent to the fountains which contributed significantly to the ongoing drainage issues at the park. Upon completion of the drainage project, Town staff will plant approximately 15 new four-caliper-inch trees and replace all sod in both the large and small dog parks. After a two-week period of sod watering and establishment, the parks are expected to re-open in mid-October.
